How It Works

The system is made of one charging platform installed on the ground and one drone retrofit-kit mounted on the drone. When the drone lands on the platform, two contacts installed on the landing gear of the drone physically touch the surface of the charging platform establishing the electrical connection. As long as the drone lands on the platform, the system always works at its maximum efficiency regardless of position, dimension, and orientation of the drone.

How long does it take to charge the drone?

It takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to fully charge a Mavic 2 Intelligent Flight Battery and 1 hour 10 minutes to recharge the Phantom 4 Intelligent Flight Battery. Skysense Indoor Charging Pad can deliver up to 7A and 50V i.e. 350W. Unlike common wireless charging solutions, Skysense Wired Charging technology has a consistent efficiency. To calculate the charging time you may rely on this calculator (link) with maximuum "Charge Rate Current" set to 7,000mA or less.

Does it work in the rain?

Skysense Indoor Charging Pad is IP44 thus is cannot come in contact with water. Skysense Outdoor Charging Pad is IP65 thus it can operate in rainy conditions and when its surface is wet.

Which battery type do you support?

All LiPo batteries from 3 up to 12S, including DJI Intelligent Flight Batteries.

Does the system works if my batteries are connected in parallel?

Yes. If your batteries are smart batteries and thus embed a charge-balancing circuit (e.g. DJI Intelligent Batteries), each battery is connected to the contact kit and is charged independently. If your batteries are standard LiPo batteries and do not embed a charge-balancing circuit (e.g. Tattu 6S 22,000mAh), Skysense provides a charging circuit ready to be connected to each battery and the contact kit.

Can I recharge more than one drone at the same time?

It is only possible to recharge one battery at the time with one Charging Pad. Moreover, there is generally not enough space on the charging pad to recharge more than one drone at the time.

How does the drone land precisely on the platform?

For demonstrations and POCs you may rely on the inbuilt DJI "Go Home" feature. For production environment we recommend FlytDock (link). This system has been well integrated with the Skysense Charging Pads and works out of the box. You may use other precision landing solutions providing a minimum accuracy of 20 cm.

What happens when the battery is full?

Once the battery is full, the Charging Pad will maintain the battery recharged. It is possible to configure the charging pad to behave differently.

What is the weight of the drone kit?

The weight of the drone kit is between 20-50g and does not impact on the drone flight time.

How can I monitor and manage the Skysense Charging Pad?

It is possible to monitor and manage the Skysense Charging Pad network via Skysense API, command line tools and GUI.
